I’m used to first days in new institutions. You’re in a room with people you’ve never seen before and lecturers who you haven’t seen since the open day or in this case the interview. There are the students that are very vivacious and eager to impress fellow colleagues and the ones who are quite and shy. I’m a fairly approachable and talkative guy. Today, however, I felt a bit of communication fatigue. Maybe it’s that I’ve spent too much time meeting new people.
Anyway, it’s a good University with a very good rating for media research. Research varies from practice based in art and written research in media plus a couple of music related proposals. It’s a long process that takes in many stages. The first main deadline is in January 2010 when registration is made through a written proposal and literary review of your subject area. After hearing most of the proposals I’m happy with my chosen area as it’s progressive and is a natural development of my experience both in my career and educationally. My worst thoughts are that my subject area is irrelevant or too obscure.
